How the SIG 556xi Concealed Bag Deployment Video Should Have Been Done

| August 18, 2014 | 1 Comments

Two weeks ago, SIG Sauer released a video of their 556xi rifle being deployed from the SIG MPX Deployment bag. According to SIG, the video was not meant to be “tactical,” but any time a big company puts out material like this I’m inclined to analyze it.

Before we go any further, here’s the video. It’s just over 30 seconds long.

The video looks good and has a nice production value, but there are several things that could have been done differently:

  • The man should have engaged the threat with a pistol first. Even with a round in the chamber it still took him about three or four seconds to get the rifle up and going. That’s too long if someone is actively shooting at you. If only SIG made handguns they could use for a demonstration ….
  • For safety reasons I do not carry any of my SBR or PDW with a round in the chamber except for the FAB Defense KPOS Glock enclosure. I am concerned about the safeties on other firearms accidentally going to the “off” position. I’ve carried a bag 5 – 6 days a week since December of 2012, and while I’ve never had a safety flip yet, I’m still not comfortable enough to carry a round in the chamber.
  • The man positions himself above the car’s hood while deploying the rifle. Better cover would be had behind either wheel and/or the engine block. His torso, arms, and head were also fully exposed.
  • He never moves once he starts shooting.

Now, here’s our version:

Additionally, I switched hands and shot the second set of targets left-handed to maximize the use of my cover.

I understand that SIG just wanted to show their 556xi rifle off as well as their new concealed carry bag. However, we have an opportunity to educate people about the pros and cons of bag carry every time someone or some company puts something out like this.

SIG’s YouTube and Facebook pages have all sorts of comments that could have been addressed if they did the video differently, such as “By the time he got that out of the bag I would have shot him with my pistola !” If SIG had done the video a little differently, we’d be writing about the MPX Deployment bag and not their techniques.

Try this scenario out the next time you’re at the range. Maybe we can all learn something from you.

Very nice. Maybe they should consult you next time they want to do a video. Or at least invite you to the Sig Academy since they’re getting free publicity from you LOL!
