NSR Tactical Horizontal TDI Knife Sheath Review

| April 20, 2015 | 4 Comments

After attending the Polite Society Tactical Conference at Rangemaster this year, I decided to carry a small, fixed blade knife on my body centerline.

This was easier said than done: the knife I wanted (the Clinch Pick) was out of stock, and the knife I had (smaller TDI) has a sheath that holds the knife vertically. This makes it more difficult to draw in a clinch, and forces you to use an icepick only grip. The icepick grip has its place, but a horizontal sheath gives you flexibility.

I found a horizontal TDI sheath from NSR Tactical called the TDI-HS. I ordered it on March 1st, and it arrived last Saturday. It’s simple, well built, and works great.

I  have been using a custom made sheath since I ordered the TDI-HS from NSR, and the differences are few but notable:

  • The NSR’s clip is very robust and sturdy. My custom sheath has a custom clip. There’s nothing wrong with the clip on my custom sheath, but the NSR one is more professional. Although I don’t have a problem with the clip, you can buy a loop for $3 more.
  • The NSR has a more rounded, shovel-headed profile. I haven’t had a problem with the more pointy design of my custom sheath, however the NSR would be even less likely to get caught up on clothing or poke you.
  • The NSR has two rivets for reinforcement instead of three. This is probably fine; the clip is attached to two rivets just like my custom one, so both are equally secure against a shearing attempt from an attacker.
  • The NSR can be had in tons of different colors, from solids to prints. This was not important to me (I ordered a black one from NSR) but may be to you.

The most important difference is that the NSR offering is a retail item. It’s made by a trustworthy company that has been in business for awhile. They have a good Web site and you can buy the TDI-HS whenever you want as often as you’d like.

The custom sheath I have was made by a friend that has a Kydex setup. I am lucky to know him, and lucky that he was willing to build the sheath and a TDI trainer for me. You may not know someone who builds Kydex holsters and sheaths. The process required my blade as a reference. It was an easy thing to do, but you may not have access to someone for custom work.

NSR Tactical offers their TDI-HS for $28 before shipping and options. My TDI sheath was $36 after shipping. You can buy the TDI-HS and a TDI knife from them in case you don’t have a blade already.

The only criticism I have is that I wish their Web site stated that lead time would be 6 – 8 weeks before I ordered the sheath. The announcement was made after I completed my purchase. My total wait time was just under seven weeks including shipping time via USPS Priority Mail.

All in all, I am very happy with the TDI-HS knife sheath from NSR Tactical. It is well crafted and is readily available (with wait time) for everyone. When you buy from NSR Tactical you are supporting a US company.

Plus, they were kind enough to comply with my goofy request of drawing a giant squid fighting a unicorn on my invoice:

What is that belt you are wearing in the post about carrying the knife from earlier this year?

Great review. I’ll add a few things as I think it is important to mention. As with all my NSR gear, the build quality is superb and the fit and finish is exquisite. That’s because it’s handcrafted by a guy who not only knows how to make kydex products but has been extensively field tested. The VALUE of NSR gear is second to none IMHO. The price you pay is very good too and if you catch his Facebook page sales, it’s almost a steal. With this quality and price, one will not own just one piece of NSR gear.

  3. SBS, i am the author and webmaster of nsrtactical. I just wanted to say thank you for reviewing our gear. We are glad you are pleased. We really do strive to provide outstanding quality at affordable prices. We took your suggestion and posted the lead time on the front page. The recent surge in demand for our products in the last 6 – 9 months has been both exciting and overwhelming for us. We have expanded production by building an entirely new workshop and hiring new employees. However, bending and finishing Kydex is skilled labor and the learning curve is steep. We hope to reduce lead times by the end of the quarter but regardless quality is one thing that will never be compromised at NSRTACTICAL.COM
