Fitting a Sling Bag

| October 27, 2014 | 2 Comments

If your environment and equipment permit it, I recommend investigating a sling bag type of backpack for on-body carry of SBR and PDW. The ability to access the bag while moving, and without removing the bag from your body, offer advantages over traditional two-strap backpacks.

Unfortunately, finding the right sling bag can be problematic based on the size and shape of your body as well as the type of firearm you intend to carry.

You are a unique snowflake

There are various factors about your body that may guide you to one size of a sling bag over others. Your height, weight, and torso length will all play a part. I also find that where you carry your weight may also make a difference. A thicker waist helps camouflage the wider bottom of a sling bag.

I am 6′ 0″ and have a 44″ chest. I have broad shoulders and a 33″ waist, although that is expanding as time increases and my discipline decreases. This means that our smaller two bags look fine on me, but the largest pack from Bulldog Tactical (a clone of the popular 5.11 Select Carry bag) is too big for my frame.

Additionally, you should select a bag based on what you are going to put inside of it. If you get a bag that is too big for your firearm it will shift around and be more difficult to exhume in case of an emergency. If the bag is a little too small you may have a problem clearing the bag.

Here’s a short video about these issues:

One bag size won’t fit all — either your body or your tools. You’re going to have to experiment and practice, which is the name of the EDC PDW game anyway.

Good luck, and stay tuned for specific bag reviews.

Thanks for all the work putting all these together, I almost always grab a kernel of knowledge, or you raise a question I need to think about.
