Remington 870 Tac-14 Update: First 25 Shots

| July 26, 2017 | 3 Comments

I attended the Vehicle Defense class from QSI Training last Saturday (3×3 review will be done as soon as I figure out where to film it).

After class, Erik allowed me to test fire my Remington 870 Tac-14 firearm. It was the first time I’d fired it, and after reading about the recoil I was a little concerned about it. I have matchstick arms, unlike the tanned hams Gabe Suarez calls forearms.

The concussion is certainly “inspiring,” but after shooting vSBRs exclusively for the last three years or so it didn’t bother me.

Recoil seemed slightly more harsh than a shotgun with a longer barrel (we have a 20″ Mossberg 590 and an 18.5″ Maverick 88 in the house). However, I haven’t taken a shotgun class since 2012, so I could be wrong.

Operationally everything went pretty well. The bolt for the Mesa Tactical grip adapter rotated loose after 20 rounds. I may purchase a torque socket driver to get things just right. I’ve been told to stop putting Loctite on bolts 😉

I am also going to get the extended buffer tube for the brace. The MagPul grip is too close right now.

I still need to put the XS Big Dot front sight on.

Overall, pretty happy after a very brief test shoot with 2 3/4″ #8, #4, 00 low recoil, and 00.

  1. I’m surprised you didn’t have trouble working the pump when shooting from the car, it does not seem like a situation conducive to that sort of thing.

What are your thoughts on the Mossberg 500 Compact Cruiser AOW in this role? No stock/brace, but much more compact.

My mistake! Test firing was after class, not during. I’m sorry for not being clear.

Interesting idea about an AOW, we can’t have SBS in Minnesota so this would be the only other route to take.

You might also want to look at adding the CAA Side Saddle or similar to the stock. It will fit with the Shockwave.
